Talking Audio with Brian Sutich

Hey everyone. In case you don’t know me, my name is Aaron Dowd. I’m 30 years old, I live in Fort Worth, Texas, and I’m a full-time podcast editor for the seanwes network. I’m also studying recording, mixing and mastering, and I play drums in a folk/punk band called Not Half Bad.

I met Brian in the seanwes community recently, and when I found out he was an audio engineer working at Teaneck Sound Studio in New Jersey (a recording studio founded by the drummer of Blood Sweat and Tears), I asked if he’d be willing to do a Skype call to chat about audio stuff. So what you’re about to hear is that conversation, mostly un-edited.

In this call, we talked about a lot of things related to audio, including:

  • How we got started in audio
  • Which mics you should invest in if you’re just getting started
  • Buying gear on a budget
  • Why it’s important to learn how to listen to your clients
  • Why you should invest your time in doing things you love
  • Mixing only in digital vs analog
  • What gain staging is
  • Our favorite podcasts and learning resources
  • Balancing family and work lives while pursuing your passion
  • and more

I hope you enjoy this recording. If you have any questions or want to say hi, you can send me an email or find me on Twitter, @thepodcastdude. Thanks for listening.
